Bogomolets National Medical University Kiev Is the oldest university in Ukraine, with a global cultural environment and a fantastic student life. HISTORY

1840

His Emperor Highness Mykola I signed the Highest Rescript about opening the medical faculty at St. Volodymyr University .

1841

Council of St. Volodymyr University approved the decision about opening the 1st medical faculty in September 1841. First admission – 29 students. On 23 (9), September, professor M.I. Kozlov read the first lecture on anatomy, and on 26 (12), September, professor V.O. Karavayev – first lecture on encyclopedia and methodology of medicine.

1921

Kyiv Institute of Health Care was renamed into Kyiv State Medical Academy, which later became Kyiv medical institute

1946

Kyiv Medical Institute was given with the name of the President of Academy of Sciences of UkrSSR O.O. Bogomolets.

1965

The historical museum of medicine was organized on the basis of the institute (since 1982 – National museum of medicine of Ukraine).

1992

The institute was reorganized into Ukrainian O.O. Bogomolets state medical university.

1995

By the Decree from the President of Ukraine the university received the status of O.O. Bogomolets National medical university.

2003

The symbolism of the University – Emblem, Anthem and Flag — were established and approved for the first time in the history of the establishment
Reorganization of stomatological polyclinic of MHC of Ukraine at NMU into Stomatological medical center of University
The University was appointed as the base establishment on coordination for implementation of Bologna declaration’s provisions in the higher medical education of MHC of Ukraine

O.O. Bogomolets National medical university celebrated 165th anniversary since its foundations,
125th birthday of academician O.O. Bogomolets,
125th anniversary since establishment of the O.O. Kysil students’ scientific society,
115th birthday of the graduate from the establishment M.O. Bulgakov.
The construction of the new modern academic laboratorial complex of the University with the library was started.

2007

according to the state rating of Ministry of health care of Ukraine – first place among higher schools of III-IV accreditation levels due to direction of health care;
Golden medal at International exhibition “Modern education in Ukraine” in nomination “Integration of science and education in higher school”;
The only in the state the faculty for training of doctors in the sphere of physical culture and sport at O.O. Bogomolets National university and National university of physical education and sport of Ukraine;

2008

1st place in rating from Ministry of health care of Ukraine among higher schools of III-IV accreditation levels due to direction “Health care”;
3rd place in the state rating from Ministry of health care of Ukraine “TOP-200 Ukraine”

2009

Famous lecture by laureate of Nobel Prize, academician Yevgen Chazov, who was awarded with the title of Honorary doctor of medicine at University.
The University was awarded with two Golden medals at International exhibitions “Modern education in Ukraine” and “Education and career”; honorary title “Leader in establishment of modern learning aids”.

2010

the University was awarded with 4 Golden medal at International specialized exhibitions “Education and career”, “Innovative studies in education” for “Development of students’ scientific research work”, “Work guidance among youth”, “Innovative studies in higher education”, “Innovative studies in comprehensive school”, “International cooperation in the sphere of education and science”;
The solemn meeting, devoted to graduation of doctors and pharmacists, took place at the National Palace of arts “Ukraine” with participation of Prime-Minister of Ukraine, Chairman of Supervisory Council of University Mykola Yanovych Azarov.
Professor V.F. Moskalenko, Vice-president of NAMS of Ukraine, academician of NAMS and corresponding member of NAPS of Ukraine, honorary worker of science and technology of Ukraine, honorary doctor of Ukraine, head at department of social medicine and health care, was elected to the post of the rector unanimously for the second time by the conference of representatives for labor collective of the University.
Modern lecture hall No 3, named after V.F. Voyno-Yasenetskyy, which became the winner at International contests among CIS countries “Prointegration awards 2010”, was opened. The contingent of persons that study at the University has increased to 10 ths. people. The special training program for doctors at the expense of Kyiv regional state administration was launched for the first time among higher medical schools of Ukraine.

2011

President of Ukraine Victor Fedorovich Yanukovich and Metropolitan of Kyiv and all Ukraine, Primate of Ukrainian Orthodox Church VOLODYMYR congratulated the graduates from the University.
O.O. Bogomolets National medical university celebrated 170th anniversary since foundation, 200th birthday for Professor Volodymyr Opanasovych Karavayev, 130th birthday for academician Oleksander Oleksandrovych Bogomolets, 130th anniversary for establishment of O.A. Kysil students’ scientific society, 120th birthday for Mykhaylo Afanasiyovych Bulgakov, 20th anniversary since establishment of Ukrainian medical lyceum at O.O. Bogomolets NMU;
City special training program of doctors for health care establishments in c. Kyiv for 2011-2017 was implemented for the first time among higher schools of Ukraine;
Golden medal at international exhibition of educational establishments “Modern education in Ukraine” in nomination “Spiritual development of youth and physical improvements”;
1st place in rating from Ministry of education and science, youth and sport of Ukraine among higher schools of III-IV accreditation levels in nomination “Health care”;
4th place in state rating among higher schools within UNESCO project “TOP-200 Ukraine”;
Perspective complex plan for development of University for 2011-2017 was developed and approved by Scientific Council
The memorial plaques in honor of the first dean of medical faculty at St. Volodymyr University, Professor V.O. Karavayev, famous graduates V.F. Voyno-Yasenetskyy (St. Luka) and play-writer and writer M.A. Bulgakov were erected at the administrative and morphological buildings of the University;
The graduates from the University received the diploma of international form “Diploma Supplement” for the first time;
The University was acknowledged as the Leader of modern education-2011, awarded with the Grand Prix and golden medal at the international exhibition “Modern educational institutions”;

  • For the first time the university took part in city special program on training of medical staff for health care establishments in c. Kyiv for 2011-2017;

Courses Offered:-

BNMU offers courses at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels in English, Russian and Ukrainian medium of instructions.

International Students are offered courses in 3 Faculties.

1. Faculty Of General Medicine:

  • Undergraduate Course- MBBS/MD (Physician)
  • Duration-6 years

The Medical course at BNMU takes six years and leads to MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MBBS.

In the under graduate program, during six years of study the students learn different subjects from fundamental subjects disciplines to special medical subjects.

Admission to the medical faculty takes place after conclusion of a contract. Foreigners learn in group of eight to ten along with other international students. The second year students attend their clinical studies where they can gain experience in nursing the patients. Clinical subjects are taught beginning from the third year of study.

The medium of instruction in the Medical faculty is English and Russian language.

The state final examinations on all the disciplines according to the syllabus are held within one system through 2 stages:

  • Testing practical proficiency of final-year students (when exams on clinical disciplines are taken, testing takes place at the patient’s bed).
  • Testing scientific/theoretical proficiency.

The successful students who will complete study of six years, will be awarded medical degree after passing the state exams.

There is a wide range of specialization available in the public and private sectors, involving research, academic medicine, public health, clinical medicine and other areas. Specialties include Cardiology, Oncology, Pediatrics, Psychological Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Public Health, General Practice and many others. Most doctors complete postgraduate training in their chosen specialty.

Post Graduate Education-

Post graduate courses are offered for foreigners in many specialties at BNMU. The faculty of postgraduate education offers the study in 55 medical specialties.

The Courses offered are:

  • Doctoral Courses.

The duration of each course depends upon the decision of the candidate and time taken by him to complete the curriculum with required number of credit and experience hours.

Appropriate level of proficiency in Russian is mandatory for acquiring the practical skills and successful completion of the course.

Most of the International Students join Clinical Residency after completion of their MD Physician course which generally is for 2-3 years.

The main objective of the postgraduate training is to allow the students of medical institutions to continue their education and general practitioners to improve their skills for further certification and faculty is directed at the training and improvement of qualification and skills of specialists to master not only up-to date medical information but new modern technologies of today and tomorrow.

The Medical faculty at BNMU, together with its teaching clinical base of 135 hospitals and other health organizations in Ukraine and abroad, will provide the necessary physical and human resources to create a scholarly environment appropriate for the training of medical graduates so that they acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become accomplished physicians and surgeons with the highest moral and ethical standards.

The individual form of training is based on qualification characteristics, professional and position requirements, principles of realized perspective and doctor’s pretensions.

Detailed theoretical training is combined with learning practical skills, operative technique, and typical and complex operations.

2. Faculty Of Stomatology:-

  • Course offered- Bachelor of dental sciences (BDS)
  • Duration- 5 years

Faculty of Stomatology/Dentistry at BNMU offers undergraduate course which for 5 years. The course is offered in Russian, Ukrainian and English.

BNMU takes pride in having the best dentistry department in Ukraine and One of the best in Eastern Europe with state of art infrastructure and most advanced methods of teaching and training students in the field of dentistry.

Dentistry is the division of medicine that studies the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of conditions and disorders in the oral cavity and other associated structures, and their effect on the human body. Good dental health is considered vital for the overall health of humans.

Dentists have supporting teams that comprise of dental assistants, technicians, assistants and therapists.

Traces of dentistry can be seen as early as 7000 BC in the Indus Valley Civilization. Over the centuries, dental treatments have been use to solve various ailments. The practice is evident in a lot of ancient cultures including those of India, Japan, Egypt and Greece. Today, dentistry has become increasingly popular and is a vital part of every health care institute.

Dentistry as a medical field is developing and rapidly changing. It now even involves cosmetology and implantology.

The awareness of people is increasing and so is the importance of dental care and hygiene. Dentists give medical, surgical and other treatments for all kinds of dental disorders. The most common procedures performed by dentists are crowning, filling, scaling, extracting teeth, tooth replacements and treating gum diseases.

Dentists can practice privately or find employment in hospitals or other health care establishments. A large majority of dentists worldwide are solo practitioners or own clinics with partners.

This course teaches subjects like Physiological Sciences, Foundations of Dental Practice, Dental Biochemistry, Oral Anatomy & Histology, Topics in Clinical Dentistry, Dentistry (Endodontic,  Prosthetics, and Operative), and Advanced Topics in Clinical Dentistry, Dental Clinical Practice, Medicine and Surgery for Dental Practice, Dental Public Health and Special Needs Dentistry.

About the course

The course in BNMU aims at preparing students for the industry by equipping them with all the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills. It will increase the number and quality of trained professionals that are an important part of all heath care organizations and institutes.

At the dentistry faculty the curriculum is worked out for five academic years. The students master the basic subjects of medical and biological profile, as well as various clinical disciplines, which are so necessary for a dentist. On condition of successful completion of study the graduates are given the Diploma of a doctor — dentist. The curriculum foresees the further postgraduate education. The degree awarded is BDS.

For the junior courses students study theoretical disciplines and beginning from the fourth course, they start studying clinical disciplines. At junior courses students study theoretical disciplines and, beginning from the fourth course, they start studying clinical disciplines. Among them there are therapeutic and orthopaedic stomatology. The chairs of anatomy, histology, normal physiology, biochemistry, general chemistry, having wonderful traditions in organization of educational process and high skilled teachers, could do profiles for the teaching of their disciplines, taking into account the faculty’s specificity.

For mastering the propaedeutic course by students the departments were well equipped additional premises, acquired a necessary quantity of visual aids and special apparatus. All employees of the chairs and students took an active part in making the educational manuals. A metal-ceramic laboratory and a laboratory for high frequency melting and casting of dentures are specially organised.

At special dental departments the students study principal actual problems of dentistry: caries, parodonthosis, diseases of the mucous membrane in the mouth cavity. The principle task of the dental faculty is perfection of higher dentistry education, raising the quality of doctors dental training.

At the faculty they worked out and applied the complex of methodical ways for optimization of educational process, which is aimed at activisation of cognitive activity of students, development of habits for educational and researching work, training the creative method of approach for professional activity. The stomatological faculty helps the students to obtain good knowledge in the dental field. It grows and develops, absorbing all the best from the experience of the University’s work.

The Clinical Residency courses are offered to students who have completed their undergraduate course at the faculty of stomatology and generally lasts for 2 years.

The Post graduate course offered at the faculty of stomatology at BNMU is a completely practical course and requires adequate knowledge of Russian/Ukrainian language for patient interaction and completion of training as a pre requisite.

3.Faculty Of Pharmacy:

  • Course Offered- B.Pharm
  • Duration – 5 years

The course in Pharmacy offered O.O Bogomolets National Medical university is designed for students who would like to specialize and be trained in the effective use of medicinal drugs. Pharmaceutical studies involve the study of chemical sciences together with health sciences. It helps ensure safe use and administration of pharmaceutical drugs.  Practicing pharmacy includes modern roles in health care and clinical services as well as reviewing drugs for more traditional services like dispensing and compounding medication.
